Poetic Portfolios

Just in time for year-end, I’ve updated the lost data for Two Roads Diverged. Looking at the performance of this portfolio, it doesn’t appear that recent market fluctuations have done too much damage relative to the S&P 500.

In a couple of days, I plan to take a look at the performance of this portfolio over various time frames as part of a year-end review.

Watching financial stocks decline over the past several months has reminded me of the risks of investing in stocks. When the market is rising, it is really easy for me to think that I’m a successful investor. Everyone feels like a financial genius when the market is doing well. (more…)

One thing that I should point out regarding my holdings, and this will be true of the other portfolios I introduce as well, is that I tend to focus on smaller companies for my individual stock holdings. There are a few reasons for this.

1. I can gain exposure to large companies more easily through mutual funds.
2. Smaller companies are often easier to understand.
3. It’s easier to gain an advantage in smaller companies. (more…)

I’ve already done blog posts at odysseyroad.com for many of my holdings in Two Roads Diverged. These will be coming over to this site. I will make note of my original date as some of the earlier posts will be out of date. Many of my small cap stocks move very quickly. Dawson Geophysical is a prime example. I have noted in the past that every quarter has been a revolution.

The first few posts on some of these companies will describe the company and what they do, but will likely have outdated valuation information.

I had initially planned to look at the holdings of Two Roads in order of largest holdings to smallest holdings, but Oyo Geospace should be announcing earnings in the next week or so. This quarter could be a transformational quarter for them as their new production facility is probably just now hitting on all cylinders. I will wait to take a close look at them until after earnings.

Until then, I will be moving some previous posts over from my Odyssey Road site. Odyssey Road started as a catch-all blog, but all my posts ended up being about stock analysis. Thus, Poetic Portfolios was born.

Coming soon to this address will be a finance blog discussing stock valuation and how to build a portfolio. I will focus on 15-25 individual stock holdings and another 10-20 watch list stocks. From these securities, I will build four portfolios. Each portfolio will have a different strategy. I will track the performance of each portfolio as well as each stock that is covered.

This site will certainly evolve over the next several months. The look will change, and the content will grow. So please keep checking back!
